Dalgona Coffee

Since summer I’ve been craving to try this recipe. It was quite easy to make it. All the recipes I found on the Internet have sugar in them. However, as you already know, I don’t like sugar so I made it without any sugar or any other sweetener.

So, what the hell is dalgona coffee? Jung_Il-Woo, a very famous actor (mostly popular for his participation in a TV series called 49 Days) from South Korea ordered this whipped coffee in Macau (video below) in a TV program called Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant. The “chef” or the guy from the restaurant literally whips the coffee by hand, 400 times. Just look at him whipping it manually. No pain, no gain I guess.

In the TV program, one of the commenters mentions that it looks like sweet sugar candy (in the video )and hence the name “dalgona” which means honeycomb toffee in Korean. However, there is a huge discussion on the Internet about the origins of this coffee, just type “Dalgona Coffee history or origins” and then you can get lost in a wormhole of information for almost a full day.

Sorry to disappoint you but I used an electrical mixture to whip it and it took me just about 5 minutes, no more. I used plant-based milk but you can use any you want.

The recipe is easy as shown in the video but anyway I am dropping here the steps I followed:

  1. Two tablespoons of instant coffee.
  2. Three tablespoons of hot boiling water.
  3. Mix them in a bowl and use the electrical mixture until it has the form of a whipped cream (about 5 minutes).
  4. Serve milk (hot or cold) in your favorite cup & then add the dalgona mix on top.
  5. Enjoy!
